Brown is the first black actor to win in this category since Jeffrey Wright's 2004 win for Angels in America.
"Thank you for the road map and the guidance to get through this performance,” Brown said to his directors. "Thank you for giving a brother a chance."
Brown also thanked his manager, his wife, and costar Sarah Paulson, who won Lead Actress in the same category.
