Walt Disney Studios gave Star Wars fans a May the Fourth surprise by announcing that Thor: Ragnarokand The Ongoing Series ArchivesMandaloriandirector Taika Waititi will co-write and direct a new, untitled Star Wars movie.
Waititi will co-write the movie, which was announced as a standalone film that will likely have no connection to the Skywalker Saga, with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Wilson-Cairns co-write 1917with Sam Mendes and also wrote on Season 3 of supernatural series Penny Dreadful.
Star Wars fans praised Waititi's contributions to season 1 of The Mandalorian, for which he voiced the killer-turned-nanny droid IG-11 and also directed the final episode, but he did not contribute any writing to the series in the first season. Any production on his Star Wars film would likely come after he completes his work writing and directing Thor: Love and Thunderfor the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
