Netflix used user data from 22 countries over six months to find trends in viewing patterns. For example, comedies are more likely to be viewed in the morning and end of the day.
“For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviors that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule. Netflix found that users were 34 percent more likely to watch comedies in the morning than any other time of day, using shows like Fuller House, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Office, and Friends as examples.
Dramas performed best at midday, accounting for 47 percent of viewing around the world. Dramas were also popular in the evening time, but were often swapped out for comedies before viewers actually powered down for the night.
