On a day that has not been wonderful for many986 Archives the LGBTQ+ community just scored one minor win.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have officially joined a small – but important – group of queer superheroes in on-panel relationships, per The Advocate.
Written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by Mirka Andolfo, DC Comics Bombshells#79 puts Harley and Ivy front and center, where their relationship is a key plot point in the story. (Harley and Ivy have kissed in previous issues of the 1940s pinup-style Bombshellsseries.)
These two have been together for a very long time. Their unique friendship in the '90s show Batman: The Animated Seriesand in the Gotham City Sirensbooks brought many to believe that there was more between them than met the eye.
Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, who currently write Harley's solo series, would agree with that sentiment. They've said in the past that their versions of Harley and Ivy are in an open relationship, but previously that has never been very overt in the books.
As the two brave the cold skies of Russia with Zatana, another Bombshellslady, it is very clear in the new issue that these two women are now not just friends, but girlfriends. The partners love and support each other in the story and we cannot wait to see more of it in the next issue.
Will this development in Harley and Ivy's relationship follow into other comics or the developing Gotham City Sirensmovie? That's unclear, but we can certainly hold out hope.
