Yet one Russian restaurant is making rodent meat mainstream by serving up river rat burgers.

Restaurateur and chef Takhir Kholikberdiev told the Guardianthat people who are reluctant about eating rodents are merely misinformed.

"It’s a really clean animal; not only is it a herbivore but it washes all its food before it eats. And it’s very high in omega-3 acids. A lot of doctors and dieticians recommend it," Kholikberdiev said.
The meat is served up in a soft bun with a generous helping of relish and costs 500 roubles (£6.90; $8.50)
For those of you who are mega keen on the idea of getting your teeth around some rat meat, the bistro is also serving up river rat hotdogs, dumplings and even river rat wrapped in cabbage leaves.
