If it's a geeky thing from the '80s or Street Stall (2015)'90s, Ready Player Oneis here to take a giant dump on it.
A newly spotted batch of posters for the March 29 film from Steven Spielberg amount to visual remixes. Each one resembles the poster from a Gen X classic like Beetlejuiceor The Lost Boys, only it swaps in a bunch of Ready Player Onecharacters.

But if you've been groaning at trailers that feature visual riffs on these same classic movies, these posters aren't likely to change your mind.
To be fair, we don't know how the final movie will turn out. The book by author Ernest Cline has been panned by some for exploiting geek sensibilities, wrapping overt references around an otherwise vapid and frequently problematic story.
Based on the trailers so far, however, Spielberg's taken some liberties. And if there's anyone alive who understands how to speak the language of geek-friendly blockbusters from the final two decades of the 20th century, it's him.
The internet, of course, responded with ample amounts of snark. There are plenty of defenders out there, too. Snark is just more fun to read.
