"It has come to my attention that one or more scam artists have taken to impersonating me online and asking some of you via private message or chat for 'donations' for various 'causes.' Just wanted to let you all know that if you encounter someone on a chat platform claiming to be me, they are lying."
Downey didn't elaborate on what kinds of scams he was talking about, likely to avoid drawing more attention to them. Downey has used his social media presence in the past to raise money for charity.
In June, he teamed up with Microsoft and Omaze to raise big bucks for his non-profit Random Act Funding.

Downey assured fans that any communication regarding charitable donations would move through his verified social media platforms.
"All fundraising is done via broad, public campaigns," the post continues. "I am constantly humbled by the incredible love, support, and generosity of our little community."
